TNCEP
Contact: Sadie Lovette
The goal of TNCEP is to help Food Stamp individuals and families gain the knowledge and skills needed to reduce the risk of inadequate nutrition while becoming empowered to move toward self-sufficiency. THis goal will be accomplished by helping families effectively use Food Stamps and related resources.
Empowerment involves the partnering agencies as well as the customers. In the words of of Dept. of Human Services supervisor, "Bringing agencies that have similar goals together to improve the nutrition and health of low income families is one of the best things about TNCEP."
TNCEP nutrition education focuses on topics such as dietary quality, childhood obesity, supermarket sense, lifelong healthy eating and food safety. Direct teaching and indirect contacts are made at sites frequented by Food Stamp families. Every effort is made to include direct sessions at DHS offices.
In addition to effective nutrition education programming, TNCEP coalitions are:
*developing a county infrastructure that is reducing the duplication of services from government agencies, and
*creating a culture of local community "ownership" for nutrition education among Food Stamp recipients.
TNCEP interfaces with the Tennessee Welfare to Work "Families First" Program by providing workforce preparation skills and reinforcing lifelong learning as families transition to self-sufficiency. For example, a first year coalition member observed, "Even though the TNCEP Program in our county is still fairly young, I think that we can all see that it is making a difference in the lives of the people here."
